A little bit more about myself
Even though I was born and raised in New England (Massachusetts) I have come to really appreciate living in New Jersey. I live in Wyckoff with my two (out of five) youngest daughters. My first 18 years in New Jersey I stayed home and raised my family. The last eight years I have been teaching social studies and loving it!

The most exciting thing I have done recently is travel to South Korea. I participated in a cultural exchange and was able to live with a family, travel all over the Korean peninsular (south of the 38th parallel), spend a night at a buddhist temple (and wake up at 4:00 AM for morning meditation) and visit a university and school. It was a tremendous learning experience!

5 new technologies to try
  • wikis (I made another wiki page today to use in 7th grade social studies)
  • saving videos from YouTube (I figured out how to do it using Savevid. Thanks Dave!)
  • digital reading sources that incorporate UDL principles
  • Ted.talks
  • Jing

4 ideas to share with others
  • using text to word in the classroom in multiple ways
  • podcasting as an activity for students
  • the bottom line activity
  • google earth, in particular the little guy who can give you an "on the street perspective" and the historical map overlay option

3 principles of Universal Design for Learning
  • representation
  • expression
  • engagement

2 changes in your teaching to reach all learners in the Digital Age
use You Tube videos in my lessons, now that I know how to download them

create and use Jing videos to facilitate teaching when my students have laptop time in our classroom
help my students use digital reading sources that utilize UDL, they will be able to see and hear the information in a new way

1 BIG idea to implement “in the fall”

a class wiki page

I want to increase my students' independence. Creating a class wiki page will help students and parents to stay up to date on what is going on in our social studies classroom. My students will be able to access and use information independently on their own time rather than visiting me during lunch or after school.
